Chlorides Market Size in Hungary

In 2021, the Hungarian chlorides market decreased by -2.4% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted strong growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Chlorides Production in Hungary

In value terms, chlorides production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 30%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) decreased by -13.2% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 410%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chlorides exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +243.9% against 2013 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 177%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of chlorides exports from Hungary, with a combined 49% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, Lithuania, Germany, Serbia, Greece and Austria, which together accounted for a further 51%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +124.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for chlorides exported from Hungary were Poland ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 50% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +127.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average chlorides export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Hungary

In 2021, approx. X tons of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) were imported into Hungary; with a decrease of -10.2% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chlorides imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the largest chlorides supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, chlorides imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Austria (X tons), with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Czech Republic amounted to +47.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+6.3% per year) and Austria (-12.7% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) to Hungary, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany totaled +12.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+32.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+30.8% per year).

In 2021, the average chlorides import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, chlorides import price increased by +100.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
