Coffee Extract Market Size in Hungary

After two years of decline, the Hungarian coffee extract market increased by 18% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Coffee extract consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract production rose modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 8.2%. Coffee extract production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, when their volume decreased by -8.8% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 23%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Serbia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) were the main destinations of coffee extract exports from Hungary, together accounting for 53% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +28.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for coffee extract exported from Hungary were Serbia ($X), Romania ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 46% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Romania, with a CAGR of +24.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average coffee extract export price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 18%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -23.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of coffee extract to Hungary, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, coffee extract imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland stood at +1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+26.8% per year) and Spain (+5.2% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X), Spain ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest coffee extract suppliers to Hungary, together comprising 57% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +250.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average coffee extract import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
