In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Hungarian direct dye market, when its value increased by 19% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a pronounced setback. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, direct dye exports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Serbia (X tons) was the main destination for direct dye exports from Hungary, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, direct dye exports to Serbia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), twofold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Serbia totaled +27.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-0.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (-9.2% per year).

In value terms, Serbia ($X) remains the key foreign market for direct dyes and preparations based thereon exports from Hungary, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Serbia amounted to +29.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-2.1% per year) and the Czech Republic (-11.0% per year).

The average direct dye export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. In 2021, Germany (X tons) was the main direct dye supplier to Hungary, with a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, direct dye imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Finland (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to -3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (-21.0% per year) and Belgium (-49.7% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of direct dyes and preparations based thereon to Hungary, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
