For the third consecutive year, Hungary recorded growth in shipments abroad of dry vegetables, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 18%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, dry vegetable exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +40.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main destinations of dry vegetable exports from Hungary, with a combined 62% share of total exports. France, Spain, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, Croatia and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +58.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for dry vegetable exported from Hungary were Germany ($X), the United States ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for 55% of total exports. France, Spain, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, the UK, Croatia and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Among the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +54.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average dry vegetable export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 4.9%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

For the third consecutive year, Hungary recorded growth in purchases abroad of dry vegetables, which increased by 36% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, dry vegetable imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), India (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of dry vegetable imports to Hungary, together accounting for 53% of total imports. Serbia, Poland, Germany, Egypt, Spain, Romania, Belgium, France, Slovakia and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +35.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), China ($X) and India ($X) were the largest dry vegetable suppliers to Hungary, with a combined 44% share of total imports. Serbia, France, Germany, Poland, Egypt, Spain, Slovakia, Romania, Belgium and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

Slovakia, with a CAGR of +39.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average dry vegetable import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
