Electronic Chip Market Size in Hungary

In 2021, the Hungarian electronic chip market decreased by -14.9% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, the total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -32.7% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, electronic chip production shrank significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 371%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

For the fifth year in a row, Hungary recorded decline in shipments abroad of electronic chips, which decreased by -4.5% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 20%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, electronic chip exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 36%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X units), the UK (X units) and Romania (X units) were the main destinations of electronic chip exports from Hungary, together accounting for 66% of total exports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Austria, Portugal, the Czech Republic, France and Spain, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +91.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for electronic chips exports from Hungary, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at +5.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (-4.9% per year) and Portugal (+106.6% per year).

In 2021, the average electronic chip export price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 30% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 61% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the UK (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+23.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2021, supplies from abroad of electronic chips decreased by -40.1% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 41%. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, electronic chip imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +66.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X units) constituted the largest electronic chip supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, electronic chip imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X units), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (X units), with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at -1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-9.7% per year) and Belgium (+16.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest electronic chip suppliers to Hungary were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Ireland ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Ireland, with a CAGR of +15.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average electronic chip import price stood at $X per thousand units in 2021, rising by 92% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a buoyant expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per thousand units), while the price for Belgium ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
