Garlic Market Size in Hungary

In 2022, the Hungarian garlic market increased by 4.3% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, garlic exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Croatia (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main destinations of garlic exports from Hungary, together comprising 94% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +29.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Croatia ($X), Slovenia ($X) and Slovakia ($X) were the largest markets for garlic exported from Hungary worldwide, with a combined 93% share of total exports. Serbia, Austria and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.7%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 65%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+16.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, overseas purchases of garlic increased by 8.6% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, garlic imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 125% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest garlic supplier to Hungary, with a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, garlic imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), eightfold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain amounted to +18.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-5.3% per year) and Turkey (+765.4% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Hungary, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 7.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain amounted to +25.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-5.5% per year) and Turkey (+1,374.2% per year).

The average garlic import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -25.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 38% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
