The Hungarian non-wheat groats market declined to $X in 2021, waning by -8.4% against the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat groats exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Romania (X tons) was the main destination for non-wheat groats exports from Hungary, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, non-wheat groats exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), twofold. Slovakia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Romania totaled +12.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+20.6% per year) and Slovakia (+6.4% per year).

In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) exports from Hungary, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Romania stood at +9.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+21.2% per year) and Belgium (+3.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average non-wheat groats export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight contraction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Congo ($X per ton) and Lebanon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cyprus (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, Hungary recorded decline in supplies from abroad of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat), which decreased by -75.4% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 712% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat groats imports declined significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 276% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) were the main suppliers of non-wheat groats imports to Hungary, with a combined 82% share of total imports. Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Romania and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +34.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) to Hungary, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Croatia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany stood at +2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Croatia (-6.2% per year) and Poland (+13.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average non-wheat groats import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 165% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a noticeable increase. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+14.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
