Honey Market Size in Hungary

In 2022, the Hungarian honey market increased by 4.5% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a strong expansion. Honey consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Honey Production in Hungary

In value terms, honey production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of honey decreased by -9.9% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, honey exports reduced to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of honey exports from Hungary, together accounting for 74% of total exports. Japan, Austria, Spain and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +17.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for honey exported from Hungary were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 67% of total exports. Japan, Austria, Spain and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +20.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average honey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -1.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, the amount of honey imported into Hungary fell significantly to X tons, which is down by -18.1% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 1,958% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, honey imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 1,255% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest honey supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, honey imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Poland (X tons), with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ukraine totaled +10.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+20.7% per year) and Poland (+50.0% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of honey to Hungary, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ukraine totaled +12.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+26.7% per year) and Poland (+41.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average honey import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
