In value terms, lentil exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 325% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Romania (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main destinations of lentil exports from Hungary, together accounting for 47% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +109.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for lentil exported from Hungary were Croatia ($X), Romania ($X) and Slovakia ($X), together accounting for 44% of total exports. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+18.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest lentil supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, lentil imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada amounted to +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+3.2% per year) and Poland (+148.8% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lentils to Hungary, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada totaled +7.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+7.2% per year) and Poland (+154.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average lentil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 6.8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lentil import price increased by +91.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
