The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Romania (X tons) was the main destination for lettuce and chicory exports from Hungary, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), sixfold. Slovakia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Romania totaled +8.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+25.4% per year) and Slovakia (-1.6% per year).

In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for lettuce and chicory exports from Hungary, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Romania stood at +7.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+41.9% per year) and Slovakia (+16.8% per year).

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +12.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year.
