Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved mackerel exports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a dramatic slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 952%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Romania (X tons) was the main destination for preserved mackerel exports from Hungary, with a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by Serbia (X kg), with a 2.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Romania totaled -30.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+85.6% per year) and Slovakia (-53.8% per year).

Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 19%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, preserved mackerel imports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of preserved mackerel to Hungary, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved mackerel imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Denmark (X tons), with a 6.5% share.
