In value terms, malt exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Romania (X tons) was the main destination for malt exports from Hungary, accounting for a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, malt exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), eightfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Romania was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+3.9% per year) and Italy (-1.8% per year).
In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for malt (not roasted) exports from Hungary, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Romania totaled -2.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+0.7% per year) and Italy (-3.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average malt export price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 9.3%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (-1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Hungary
In 2021, imports of malt (not roasted) into Hungary expanded significantly to X tons, surging by 9.5% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, malt imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 29%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Slovakia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Hungary, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, malt imports from Slovakia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), ninefold. Croatia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Slovakia amounted to +4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-22.5% per year) and Croatia (-18.0% per year).
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt (not roasted) to Hungary, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Slovakia amounted to +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-24.2% per year) and Croatia (-15.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average malt import price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 8.1% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Austria ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Croatia ($X per ton) and Slovakia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
