Matches Market Size in Hungary

The Hungarian matches market shrank significantly to $X in 2021, waning by -44.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a temperate expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, matches exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of matches exports from Hungary, with a combined 79% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, the UK, Austria and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +43.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 13%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+12.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of matches, when their volume increased by 7.7% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, faced a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 112%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, matches imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons) constituted the largest matches supplier to Hungary, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, matches imports from Sweden exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Romania (X tons), with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Sweden stood at -4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-10.1% per year) and Romania (-27.4% per year).

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constituted the largest supplier of matches to Hungary, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Sweden totaled -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (-3.5% per year) and Germany (-6.1% per year).

The average matches import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 148%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the price for Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+33.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
