Mattress Market Size in Hungary

The Hungarian mattress market expanded remarkably to $X in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Mattress consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattress production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a abrupt slump. In 2022, overseas shipments of mattresses were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 81%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattress exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -24.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X units), Austria (X units) and Switzerland (X units) were the main destinations of mattress exports from Hungary, with a combined 69% share of total exports. Romania, Croatia, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +101.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and Switzerland ($X) were the largest markets for mattress exported from Hungary worldwide, together comprising 67% of total exports. Romania, Croatia, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +97.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average mattress export price amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Croatia ($X per unit) and Slovakia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per unit) and the Netherlands ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, supplies from abroad of mattresses decreased by -10.1% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, mattress imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 31%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Poland (X units), Turkey (X units) and Romania (X units) were the main suppliers of mattress imports to Hungary, together accounting for 82% of total imports. China, Germany, Slovakia and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +55.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mattress suppliers to Hungary were Poland ($X), Turkey ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports. China, Germany, Slovakia and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
