Austria (X tons), France (X tons) and Serbia (X tons) were the main destinations of millet exports from Hungary, with a combined 70% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +25.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Austria ($X) and Serbia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for millet exported from Hungary worldwide, together accounting for 59% of total exports.

In 2022, overseas purchases of millet decreased by -29.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, millet imports plummeted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 58%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest millet supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, millet imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine totaled +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+0.6% per year) and Germany (+0.0% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of millet to Hungary, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine stood at +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.2% per year) and India (+8.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average millet import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, millet import price increased by +23.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 51% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
