Molluscs Market Size in Hungary

The Hungarian molluscs market reduced to $X in 2021, dropping by -6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 999% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, molluscs exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 466% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for molluscs exports from Hungary, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, molluscs exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), fourfold. Slovakia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovenia stood at +26.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+25.0% per year) and Slovakia (+0.2% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X), Austria ($X) and Slovakia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for molluscs exported from Hungary worldwide, together accounting for 92% of total exports.

Austria, with a CAGR of +27.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average molluscs export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 68%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, molluscs imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -24.0% against 2018 indices. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) were the main suppliers of molluscs imports to Hungary, together accounting for 67% of total imports. Slovenia, Ireland, Slovakia, Germany, Belgium, Poland and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +24.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest molluscs suppliers to Hungary were Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Denmark ($X), together comprising 62% of total imports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, Slovenia, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Poland and Italy, which together accounted for a further 28%.

In 2021, the average molluscs import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 15%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
