After four years of growth, the Hungarian motor vehicle engine market decreased by -11.5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a resilient increase. Motor vehicle engine consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine exports expanded to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 11%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main destinations of motor vehicle engine exports from Hungary, together comprising 76% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, France, Mexico, Portugal, China and Poland, which together accounted for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +155.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) exports from Hungary, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany amounted to -4.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+12.4% per year) and Spain (+20.2% per year).

The average motor vehicle engine export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 11%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2021, overseas purchases of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 117%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of motor vehicle engine imports to Hungary, together comprising 99% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +181.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) to Hungary, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +21.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+7.7% per year) and Poland (+160.7% per year).

In 2021, the average motor vehicle engine import price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, motor vehicle engine import price increased by +31.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 60%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
