In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine exports expanded to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 11%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main destinations of motor vehicle engine exports from Hungary, together comprising 76% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, France, Mexico, Portugal, China and Poland, which together accounted for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +155.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 117%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of motor vehicle engine imports to Hungary, together comprising 99% of total imports.
