Exports from Hungary
In 2022, overseas shipments of non-cellular polystyrene films, sheets, foil and strip decreased by -44.7% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-cellular polystyrene film exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 213% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of non-cellular polystyrene film exports from Hungary, together comprising 74% of total exports. Slovakia, Croatia, Turkey, the United States and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +27.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for non-cellular polystyrene films, sheets, foil and strip exports from Hungary, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at +36.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+18.4% per year) and Slovakia (+2.4% per year).

In 2022, supplies from abroad of non-cellular polystyrene films, sheets, foil and strip decreased by -7.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +19.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, non-cellular polystyrene film imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of non-cellular polystyrene film to Hungary, accounting for a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, non-cellular polystyrene film imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany stood at +9.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+12.8% per year) and Austria (+3.9% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-cellular polystyrene films, sheets, foil and strip to Hungary, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany totaled +13.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+11.2% per year) and Italy (+6.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average non-cellular polystyrene film import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 16%.
