In 2021, the Hungarian nucleic acid market decreased by -13.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate strong growth. Nucleic acid consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 18%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, nucleic acid exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +62.6% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands (X tons), China (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of nucleic acid exports from Hungary, together accounting for 59% of total exports. These countries were followed by Poland, Germany, Brazil, France, Estonia and Russia, which together accounted for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +209.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for nucleic acids and their salts exports from Hungary, comprising 27% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.

In 2021, overseas purchases of nucleic acids and their salts decreased by -13% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 96% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nucleic acid imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 71%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) were the main suppliers of nucleic acid imports to Hungary, with a combined 60% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +137.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nucleic acids and their salts to Hungary, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 10% share.
