Exports from Hungary
In 2022, exports of optical fiber cables from Hungary expanded rapidly to X tons, increasing by 5.4% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, optical fiber cables exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of optical fiber cables exports from Hungary, together accounting for 71% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Romania, France, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia and Russia, which together accounted for a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +68.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for optical fiber cables exports from Hungary, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 9.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany amounted to +1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+22.0% per year) and the United States (-2.7% per year).

In 2022, the average optical fiber cables export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -8.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 127%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+18.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary
In 2022, imports of optical fiber cables into Hungary contracted to X tons, with a decrease of -13.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +12.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 64%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, optical fiber cables imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 25%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest optical fiber cables supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, optical fiber cables imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovenia (X tons), with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +15.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-0.5% per year) and Slovenia (+0.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of optical fiber cables to Hungary, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +12.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-0.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+41.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average optical fiber cables import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -14.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
