Pear Market Size in Hungary

The Hungarian pear market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, picking up by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +25.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 52%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of pears in Hungary amounted to X tons per ha in 2021, rising by 2.2% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pear yield decreased by -13.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 78%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the average pear yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of pears production in Hungary amounted to X ha, increasing by 4.6% against 2020. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 7.5%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the pear harvested area failed to regain momentum.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of pears decreased by -71.6% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 324%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pear exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 258% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main destinations of pear exports from Hungary, together comprising 81% of total exports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ukraine (with a CAGR of +31.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Romania ($X) and Austria ($X) constituted the largest markets for pear exported from Hungary worldwide, with a combined 74% share of total exports. The average pear export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 222% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+24.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of pears increased by 8.7% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 154% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +36.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+3.5% per year) and Belgium (+44.1% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pears to Hungary, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled +37.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+6.0% per year) and Spain (+49.8% per year).

The average pear import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
