Crude Oil Market Size in Hungary
In 2022, the Hungarian crude oil market increased by 10% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. Crude oil consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Hungary
In 2022, shipments abroad of crude petroleum oil decreased by -0.6% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 66%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, crude oil exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 170% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for crude oil exports from Hungary, accounting for a 100% share of total exports. It was followed by Serbia (X tons), with a 0.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovakia stood at +2.2%.
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for crude petroleum oil exports from Hungary, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Serbia ($X), with a 0.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovakia stood at +9.5%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average crude oil export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 230% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Hungary
In 2022, supplies from abroad of crude petroleum oil increased by 0.8% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, crude oil imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest crude oil supplier to Hungary, with a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, crude oil imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kazakhstan (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Croatia (X tons), with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia totaled -1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+10.9% per year) and Croatia (+10.2% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of crude petroleum oil to Hungary, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 3.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Russia totaled -4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+26.2% per year) and Croatia (+26.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average crude oil import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 57% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Croatia ($X per ton) and Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+14.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
