Polycarbonate Market Size in Hungary

The Hungarian polycarbonate market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a pronounced slump. Polycarbonate consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polycarbonate production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Hungary

After seven years of growth, shipments abroad of polycarbonates (in primary forms) decreased by -26.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, polycarbonate exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Slovakia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of polycarbonate exports from Hungary, with a combined 72% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +61.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for polycarbonate exported from Hungary were Poland ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 71% of total exports. Italy, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Romania, Slovenia and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Slovenia, with a CAGR of +67.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average polycarbonate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 45%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovenia (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of polycarbonates (in primary forms), when their volume decreased by -23.8% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, polycarbonate imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 78% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Korea (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of polycarbonate to Hungary, with a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, polycarbonate imports from South Korea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovenia (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Korea stood at +43.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovenia (+3.2% per year) and the Netherlands (-3.5% per year).

In value terms, South Korea ($X) constituted the largest supplier of polycarbonates (in primary forms) to Hungary, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovenia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from South Korea stood at +44.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-0.9% per year) and Slovenia (+4.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average polycarbonate import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
