Potato Market Size in Hungary
The Hungarian potato market soared to $X in 2021, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Potato Production in Hungary
In value terms, potato production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
The average yield of potatoes in Hungary fell slightly to X tons per ha in 2021, standing approx. at the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 16%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the average potato yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the harvested area of potatoes in Hungary stood at X ha, growing by 15% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a drastic downturn. The potato harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Hungary
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of potatoes, when their volume decreased by -27.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 175%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, potato exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 134%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Hungary, with a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic stood at +20.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (-12.7% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+13.0% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Romania ($X) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for potato exported from Hungary worldwide, together comprising 58% of total exports. Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, Croatia and Kosovo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Kosovo, with a CAGR of +33.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average potato export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Potato Imports
Imports into Hungary
In 2021, purchases abroad of potatoes increased by 2.7% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 187%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, potato imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Hungary, with a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. Slovakia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France amounted to +23.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+11.6% per year) and Slovakia (+14.6% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Hungary, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovakia, with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from France amounted to +21.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+9.4% per year) and Slovakia (+12.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average potato import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 331%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices from Austria ($X per ton) and Slovakia ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
