Potato Starch Market Size in Hungary

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the Hungarian potato starch market, when its value increased by 18% to $X. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Potato starch consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 173%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato starch exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 199%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

North Macedonia (X tons) was the main destination for potato starch exports from Hungary, accounting for a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, potato starch exports to North Macedonia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Russia (X tons), with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to North Macedonia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-12.8% per year) and Russia (+105.4% per year).

In value terms, North Macedonia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for potato starch exports from Hungary, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to North Macedonia amounted to +1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-15.7% per year) and Russia (+105.1% per year).

In 2021, the average potato starch export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+21.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2021, overseas purchases of potato starch were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato starch imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 53%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato starch imports to Hungary, with a combined 64% share of total imports. The Czech Republic, the Netherlands, France and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
