In 2021, the Hungarian rice market decreased by -11.8% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The average yield of rice in Hungary reduced to X tons per ha in 2021, with a decrease of -10.9% compared with 2020 figures. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, rice exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Slovakia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main destinations of rice exports from Hungary, with a combined 86% share of total exports. Poland, Austria and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +106.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for rice exported from Hungary were Slovakia ($X), Germany ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for 85% of total exports. Austria, Poland and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.2%.

In 2021, the average rice export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary
In 2021, imports of rice into Hungary dropped notably to X tons, with a decrease of -19.4% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rice imports declined to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest rice supplier to Hungary, with a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, rice imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Greece (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy totaled +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+57.2% per year) and Greece (-2.2% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rice to Hungary, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy totaled +5.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+55.5% per year) and Poland (+23.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average rice import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 18% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
