In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of sawnwood (non-coniferous) were exported from Hungary; picking up by 5.4% on 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sawnwood (non-coniferous) exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Italy (X cubic meters) was the main destination for sawnwood (non-coniferous) exports from Hungary, accounting for a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, sawnwood (non-coniferous) exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X cubic meters), twofold. France (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy totaled -1.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-3.4% per year) and France (+4.3% per year).
In value terms, Austria ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest markets for sawnwood (non-coniferous) exported from Hungary worldwide, together comprising 49% of total exports. Malaysia, France, China, Portugal, the UK, Croatia, Romania and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +47.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average sawnwood (non-coniferous) export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, surging by 2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary
In 2022, purchases abroad of sawnwood (non-coniferous) increased by 9% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 38%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sawnwood (non-coniferous) imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild expansion. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Ukraine (X cubic meters), Croatia (X cubic meters) and Italy (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of sawnwood (non-coniferous) imports to Hungary, with a combined 44% share of total imports. Poland, Romania, Austria, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Latvia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 46%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +59.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ukraine ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the largest sawnwood (non-coniferous) suppliers to Hungary, together accounting for 51% of total imports. Austria, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
Among the main suppliers, Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a CAGR of +54.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sawnwood (non-coniferous) import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sawnwood (non-coniferous) import price increased by +89.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 32%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Slovakia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
