Sorghum Market Size in Hungary

In 2022, the Hungarian sorghum market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Sorghum Production in Hungary

In value terms, sorghum production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 192% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of sorghum in Hungary amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 9.3% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sorghum yield decreased by -19.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 57%. The sorghum yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the sorghum harvested area in Hungary contracted modestly to X ha, declining by -1.9% against the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 142% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sorghum production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports from Hungary

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of sorghum, when their volume decreased by -1.7% to X tons. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 369% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, sorghum exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 172%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for sorghum exports from Hungary, accounting for a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy stood at +31.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+32.9% per year) and Poland (+10.0% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for sorghum exports from Hungary, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy totaled +28.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+34.5% per year) and Poland (+9.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average sorghum export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 217% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, overseas purchases of sorghum were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports enjoyed moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 274%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sorghum imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 465% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main suppliers of sorghum imports to Hungary, with a combined 72% share of total imports. France, Argentina, India, Germany and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +81.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sorghum suppliers to Hungary were France ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 83% share of total imports. Ukraine, Argentina, the United States, Romania and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

Among the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +68.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sorghum import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 160%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
