Strawberry Market Size in Hungary

Exports from Hungary

In 2022, the amount of strawberries exported from Hungary soared to X tons, increasing by 119% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 624%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, strawberry exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 495%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main destinations of strawberry exports from Hungary, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +109.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Strawberry imports into Hungary stood at X tons in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, strawberry imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +41.7% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 29%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of strawberry to Hungary, accounting for a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, strawberry imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Greece (X tons), threefold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at +16.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Greece (+2.1% per year) and Austria (-0.1% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of strawberries to Hungary, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Greece ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain amounted to +18.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Greece (+4.9% per year) and Austria (+0.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average strawberry import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
