Romania (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) were the main destinations of sugar exports from Hungary, with a combined 64% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Italy, which together accounted for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, the average sugar export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 24%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of sugar increased by 5.9% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sugar imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of sugar imports to Hungary, together comprising 58% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +30.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sugar suppliers to Hungary were the Czech Republic ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Austria ($X), together accounting for 58% of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
