Surgical Glove Market Size in Hungary

In 2022, the Hungarian surgical glove market decreased by -16.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a resilient increase. Surgical glove consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 778% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. In 2022, approx. X tons of surgical gloves were exported from Hungary; growing by 2.9% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, surgical glove exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for surgical glove exports from Hungary, accounting for a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, surgical glove exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), sixfold. Lithuania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria amounted to -1.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-15.8% per year) and Lithuania (+33.4% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for surgical gloves exports from Hungary, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 8.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria totaled +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-13.6% per year) and Bulgaria (+113.8% per year).

The average surgical glove export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -7.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+25.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of surgical gloves, when their volume decreased by -7% to X tons. Overall, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, surgical glove imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In 2022, Austria (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of surgical glove to Hungary, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, surgical glove imports from Austria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), fourfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Austria stood at -1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+39.9% per year) and Germany (+6.9% per year).

In general, import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, surgical glove import price increased by +81.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
