After two years of decline, the Hungarian non-chicken table egg market increased by 0.7% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption saw a perceptible setback. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 30%. Non-chicken table egg production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Hungary

In 2021, shipments abroad of table eggs, excluding hen eggs was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a sharp decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 162%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Romania (X kg) was the main destination for non-chicken table egg exports from Hungary, accounting for a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, non-chicken table egg exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X kg), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Romania totaled +27.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+13.0% per year) and the UK (-36.8% per year).

In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for non-chicken table egg exports from Hungary, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Croatia ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Romania stood at +26.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+17.5% per year) and the UK (-21.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average non-chicken table egg export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 32% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+25.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2021, non-chicken table egg imports into Hungary contracted significantly to X tons, with a decrease of -30% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 275% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 171%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Slovakia (X tons) constituted the largest non-chicken table egg supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, non-chicken table egg imports from Slovakia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Romania (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Slovakia amounted to +10.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (+29.3% per year) and the UK (-50.2% per year).

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-chicken table egg to Hungary, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Slovakia amounted to +3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (+23.8% per year) and the UK (-49.9% per year).

In 2021, the average non-chicken table egg import price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
