Romania (X tons) was the main destination for asphalted paper exports from Hungary, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, asphalted paper exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Romania stood at -9.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+111.1% per year) and Norway (-2.4% per year).

In value terms, Romania ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard exports from Hungary, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Romania stood at -7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+105.9% per year) and Norway (+40.8% per year).

In 2022, the average asphalted paper export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 49% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 229%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard decreased by -47.7% to X tons, falling for the fifth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asphalted paper imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the largest asphalted paper supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, asphalted paper imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belarus (X tons), with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Czech Republic stood at -6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-15.8% per year) and Belarus (+8.3% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Italy ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest asphalted paper suppliers to Hungary, with a combined 80% share of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +53.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average asphalted paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
