Tea Market Size in Hungary
After three years of growth, the Hungarian tea market decreased by -0.1% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed significant growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Tea exports from Hungary reduced remarkably to X tons in 2022, falling by -17.4% on the year before. Overall, exports recorded a significant decrease. The smallest decline of -1.5% was in 2019. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tea exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main destinations of tea exports from Hungary, together accounting for 44% of total exports. Romania, Croatia, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Austria, Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 51%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by North Macedonia (with a CAGR of +89.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for tea exported from Hungary were the Czech Republic ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 49% share of total exports. Serbia, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria, Austria and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, North Macedonia, with a CAGR of +72.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average tea export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 11% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, tea export price increased by +57.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tea Imports
Imports into Hungary
In 2022, the amount of tea imported into Hungary contracted modestly to X tons, with a decrease of -1.7% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 8.5% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tea imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to Hungary, together accounting for 80% of total imports. Austria, Sri Lanka, the Czech Republic and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +3.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tea suppliers to Hungary were the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 73% share of total imports. Sri Lanka, Austria, the Czech Republic and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
Among the main suppliers, Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +7.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average tea import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, tea import price increased by +55.9% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
