After two years of growth, the Hungarian temporarily preserved vegetable market decreased by -20.4% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. Temporarily preserved vegetable consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Temporarily Preserved Vegetable Production in Hungary

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable production rose sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 75%. Temporarily preserved vegetable production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of vegetables (temporarily preserved) decreased by -0.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 187%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 162% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for temporarily preserved vegetable exports from Hungary, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, temporarily preserved vegetable exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), fourfold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Austria stood at +471.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+13.4% per year) and the Czech Republic (+10.9% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X), Slovakia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the largest markets for temporarily preserved vegetable exported from Hungary worldwide, together comprising 88% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Austria, with a CAGR of +410.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average temporarily preserved vegetable export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, supplies from abroad of vegetables (temporarily preserved) decreased by -38.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1,587% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 699% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest temporarily preserved vegetable supplier to Hungary, with a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, temporarily preserved vegetable imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X tons), with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +36.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+16.1% per year) and Turkey (+5.7% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of vegetables (temporarily preserved) to Hungary, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India totaled +35.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+3.1% per year) and Spain (+18.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average temporarily preserved vegetable import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 51%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+33.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
