Vegetable Product Market Size in Hungary

In 2022, the Hungarian vegetable product market decreased by -80.5% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, consumption recorded a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of vegetable products, when their volume decreased by -4.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 910%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, vegetable product exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 1,178% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Brazil (X tons) was the main destination for vegetable product exports from Hungary, accounting for a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, vegetable product exports to Brazil exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (X tons), fivefold. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Brazil stood at +3.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+26.3% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-42.6% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the key foreign market for vegetable products exports from Hungary, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Brazil totaled +13.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+23.0% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-47.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average vegetable product export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 68%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($X per ton) and Brazil ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, overseas purchases of vegetable products decreased by -45% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 96%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable product imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 202%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of vegetable product to Hungary, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable product imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine totaled -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+95.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+95.6% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of vegetable products to Hungary, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine amounted to -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+111.0% per year) and China (+27.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average vegetable product import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 54%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+12.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
