Veneer Sheet Market Size in Hungary

In 2022, the Hungarian veneer sheet market increased by 2% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption enjoyed a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In general, the total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. Veneer sheet production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Hungary

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise, when their volume decreased by -12.4% to X square meters. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 119%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, veneer sheet exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +25.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 42%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Germany (X square meters), Italy (X square meters) and Romania (X square meters) were the main destinations of veneer sheet exports from Hungary, with a combined 83% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +17.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for veneer sheet exported from Hungary were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Austria, Norway and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 11%.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average veneer sheet export price stood at $X per square meter in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 81%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per square meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Norway ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, purchases abroad of veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise increased by 22% to X square meters, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 121% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, veneer sheet imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, Italy (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of veneer sheet to Hungary, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, veneer sheet imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X square meters), threefold. Ukraine (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy stood at +38.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+10.1% per year) and Ukraine (+6.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest veneer sheet suppliers to Hungary were Slovakia ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 54% of total imports. Ukraine, Austria, Estonia, Romania, Croatia, Poland, Finland and Serbia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Estonia, with a CAGR of +26.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average veneer sheet import price amounted to $X per square meter, falling by -15% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 224% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per square meter), while the price for Serbia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+18.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
