In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of video game consoles (not operated by means of payments), when their volume decreased by -18.8% to X units. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 77%. The exports peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, video game console exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 119%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Slovakia (X units) was the main destination for video game console exports from Hungary, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, video game console exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X units), with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovakia amounted to -2.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+68.3% per year) and Germany (-3.0% per year).
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for video game consoles (not operated by means of payments) exports from Hungary, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Serbia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovakia stood at +1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+86.1% per year) and Germany (+1.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average video game console export price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -4.8% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+25.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary
For the fifth year in a row, Hungary recorded growth in supplies from abroad of video game consoles (not operated by means of payments), which increased by 21% to X units in 2022. In general, imports showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 122% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, video game console imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Slovakia (X units), China (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the main suppliers of video game console imports to Hungary, together comprising 81% of total imports. The Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +167.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of video game consoles (not operated by means of payments) to Hungary, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Slovakia stood at +18.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+9.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+145.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average video game console import price amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -7.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 96%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
