Wallpaper Market Size in Hungary
In 2021, the Hungarian wallpaper market decreased by -6.1% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, the total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +92.4% against 2013 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Exports from Hungary
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of wallpaper and wall coverings decreased by -87.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 309% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, wallpaper exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 200%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Romania (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main destinations of wallpaper exports from Hungary, with a combined 72% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Croatia, the Netherlands, Canada, Italy and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +185.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for wallpaper exported from Hungary were Slovakia ($X), Romania ($X) and Serbia ($X), together comprising 50% of total exports. Croatia, Canada, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Canada, with a CAGR of +82.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wallpaper export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 113% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a notable increase. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Hungary
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings, when their volume decreased by -23.7% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +19.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, wallpaper imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 64%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of wallpaper imports to Hungary, with a combined 81% share of total imports. France, Ukraine, Belgium and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +269.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wallpaper suppliers to Hungary were China ($X), Germany ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports. Poland, France, the Netherlands and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
Ukraine, with a CAGR of +222.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average wallpaper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 18%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
