Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, walnut exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 74%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for walnut exports from Hungary, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, walnut exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Austria (X tons), with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at -10.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+1.0% per year) and Austria (+27.6% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for walnut exports from Hungary, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at -14.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-2.8% per year) and Austria (+21.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average walnut export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 12%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (-3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Hungary
In 2021, the amount of walnuts imported into Hungary surged to X tons, jumping by 103% against 2020. Overall, imports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 1,483% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, walnut imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 677%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Slovakia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of walnut to Hungary, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, walnut imports from Slovakia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Romania (X tons), with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Slovakia stood at +46.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+418.4% per year) and Romania (-28.2% per year).
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of walnut to Hungary, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 28% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Slovakia totaled +32.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+410.9% per year) and Romania (-27.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average walnut import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 213%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
