Overall, total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, cotton fabric exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 25%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons) was the main destination for cotton fabric exports from Hungary, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, cotton fabric exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy amounted to +8.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+17.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+32.1% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of cotton exports from Hungary, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Ukraine, with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy totaled +4.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+4.8% per year) and Ukraine (+4.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average cotton fabric export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was North Macedonia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Hungary
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of woven fabrics of cotton, when their volume decreased by -52.9% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 78% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
In value terms, cotton fabric imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Pakistan (X tons) constituted the largest cotton fabric supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, cotton fabric imports from Pakistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Pakistan amounted to +58.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (-7.2% per year) and Germany (-1.4% per year).
In value terms, Pakistan ($X), Italy ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the largest cotton fabric suppliers to Hungary, with a combined 49% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +52.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average cotton fabric import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 42% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 109%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
