Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 1,079% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, zinc exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 2,151%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for zinc exports from Hungary, accounting for a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, zinc exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), twofold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovakia amounted to +60.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-4.7% per year) and Serbia (-54.9% per year).
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for zinc exports from Hungary, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovakia totaled +75.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-1.0% per year) and Serbia (-52.1% per year).

In 2021, the average zinc export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 493% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary
In 2021, imports of zinc into Hungary reduced to X tons, waning by -1.6% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 98,411% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, zinc imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Austria (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main suppliers of zinc imports to Hungary, together comprising 79% of total imports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Malta, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, which together accounted for a further 20%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malta (with a CAGR of +328.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest zinc suppliers to Hungary were Austria ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovakia ($X), together accounting for 78% of total imports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Malta, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, which together accounted for a further 21%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Malta, with a CAGR of +368.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average zinc import price amounted to $X per kg, growing by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 113,126% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per kg. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Malta ($X per kg) and Germany ($X per kg), while the price for Slovakia ($X per kg) and Austria ($X per kg) were amongst the lowest.
