Antibiotic Market Size in India

The Indian antibiotic market soared to $X in 2021, rising by 33% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption saw a strong expansion. Antibiotic consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of antibiotics decreased by -10.7% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 9.6%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of antibiotic exports from India, together accounting for 30% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the largest markets for antibiotic exported from India worldwide, together comprising 26% of total exports.

Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 14%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of antibiotics, when their volume increased by 13% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, antibiotic imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +14.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 31%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of antibiotic to India, accounting for a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, antibiotic imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +4.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+44.4% per year) and the United States (+3.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of antibiotics to India, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 2.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+34.4% per year) and the United States (+0.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average antibiotic import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
