Apple Market Size in India
After two years of growth, the Indian apple market decreased by -5.2% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Apple consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Apple Production in India
In value terms, apple production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
The average yield of apples in India fell sharply to X tons per ha in 2021, which is down by -19.9% on the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the average apple yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of apples production in India reached X ha, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The apple harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from India
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of apples, when their volume decreased by -3.2% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, apple exports rose to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Bangladesh (X tons), Nepal (X tons) and Bhutan (X tons) were the main destinations of apple exports from India, together accounting for 99% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Bhutan (with a CAGR of +250.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), Nepal ($X) and Bhutan ($X) were the largest markets for apple exported from India worldwide, with a combined 98% share of total exports.
Bhutan, with a CAGR of +276.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average apple export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 19% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bhutan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bhutan (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Apple Imports
Imports into India
In 2021, purchases abroad of apples was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, apple imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Iran (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the main suppliers of apple imports to India, with a combined 55% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +149.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest apple suppliers to India were Turkey ($X), Chile ($X) and Iran ($X), together comprising 48% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +140.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average apple import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 14%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Afghanistan (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
