China (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main destinations of basic dye exports from India, together accounting for 27% of total exports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Thailand, Italy, Malaysia, Turkey, Pakistan, the Netherlands, Spain, Mexico and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 39%.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Basic dye imports into India dropped to X tons in 2021, falling by -6.7% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, basic dye imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +95.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest basic dye supplier to India, with a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, basic dye imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iceland (X tons), sixfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at -7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iceland (+279.5% per year) and Germany (+10.6% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of basic dyes and preparations based thereon to India, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iceland ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 1.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iceland (+276.3% per year) and Germany (+9.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average basic dye import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
