In 2022, the Indian paperboard case material market increased by 6.8% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) were the main destinations of paperboard case material exports from India, together comprising 55% of total exports. Bangladesh, Jordan, Oman, Nigeria, China and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

In 2022, the average paperboard case material export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 48% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Angola ($X per ton) and Nigeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports into India

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of paperboard case materials increased by 10% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of paperboard case material imports to India, with a combined 65% share of total imports. Thailand, Finland, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +27.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
