For the third consecutive year, the Indian cherry and sour cherry market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 7.4% to $X in 2022. In general, the total consumption indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +17.2% against 2019 indices. In value terms, cherry and sour cherry production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 201% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Nepal (X tons) was the main destination for cherry and sour cherry exports from India, with a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, cherry and sour cherry exports to Nepal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Nepal totaled +1.1%.

In value terms, Nepal ($X) remains the key foreign market for cherries and sour cherries exports from India, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

The average cherry and sour cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -53.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

For the seventh consecutive year, India recorded growth in purchases abroad of cherries and sour cherries, which increased by 101% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 134% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 192%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Afghanistan (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Iran (X tons) were the main suppliers of cherry and sour cherry imports to India, together comprising 76% of total imports.

Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry and sour cherry import price decreased by -31.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 46%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
