Chicken Meat Market Size in India

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Indian chicken meat market, when its value decreased by -10.8% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Chicken Meat Production in India

In value terms, chicken meat production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +39.4% against 2017 indices. In 2021, overseas shipments of chicken meat were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 78%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chicken meat exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 99% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bhutan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of chicken meat exports from India, together comprising 59% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +22.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bhutan ($X) remains the key foreign market for chicken meat exports from India, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Bhutan totaled +22.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-9.8% per year) and Vietnam (+12.0% per year).

The average chicken meat export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 24%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Yemen (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India

In 2021, supplies from abroad of chicken meat increased by 66% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, chicken meat imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw buoyant growth. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of chicken meat imports to India, with a combined 94% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +43.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Brazil ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the largest chicken meat suppliers to India, with a combined 92% share of total imports.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +43.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average chicken meat import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
