In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Indian cider, perry and mead market, when its value decreased by -5.1% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +70.4% against 2012 indices. Cider, perry and mead consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +70.4% against 2012 indices. In 2021, exports of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages from India skyrocketed to X litres, growing by 145% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 175% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X litres in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 219%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria (X litres) was the main destination for cider, perry and mead exports from India, accounting for a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, cider, perry and mead exports to Nigeria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X litres), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X litres), with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Nigeria stood at +15.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+34.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-13.8% per year).

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages exports from India, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Nigeria amounted to +12.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+27.8% per year) and Sri Lanka (+69.1% per year).

The average cider, perry and mead export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 50%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages decreased by -2% to X litres for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 2,134%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 2,234% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Korea (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of cider, perry and mead to India, with a 31% share of total imports. Moreover, cider, perry and mead imports from South Korea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ireland (X litres), twofold. Spain (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Korea totaled +34.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ireland (+26.9% per year) and Spain (+72.9% per year).

In value terms, South Korea ($X), Spain ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest cider, perry and mead suppliers to India, together comprising 40% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +69.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cider, perry and mead import price stood at $X per litre in 2021, waning by -13% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 35% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per litre), while the price for Ireland ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
