After three years of decline, the Indian green coffee market increased by 22% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a slight slump. Green coffee consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Green Coffee Production in India

In value terms, green coffee production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 5.5%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of coffee (green) in India reduced modestly to X kg per ha in 2022, waning by -4.9% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average green coffee yield hit record highs at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. In 2022, the amount of coffee (green) exported from India rose slightly to X tons, growing by 2.6% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, green coffee exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of green coffee exports from India, with a combined 48% share of total exports. Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Libya, Greece, Kuwait, Israel, Egypt, Australia and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +47.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for green coffee exported from India were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 46% share of total exports. Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Turkey, Libya, Greece, Australia, Israel, South Korea and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Among the main countries of destination, Turkey, with a CAGR of +48.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average green coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kuwait (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India

In 2022, overseas purchases of coffee (green) increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, green coffee imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) were the main suppliers of green coffee imports to India, with a combined 86% share of total imports. Uganda and Honduras lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Honduras (with a CAGR of +38.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green coffee suppliers to India were Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports. Uganda and Honduras lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Honduras, with a CAGR of +41.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average green coffee import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Honduras ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) and Kenya ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
